Day trip to a medieval village

The French really love Easter, so in addition to it being yesterday, they also get take the next day off as well.  So we decided to take a day trip to a nearby medieval village about 19 miles away out in the country.  The kids were excited to take a train ride.  Johnny kept asking if it was going to be a bullet train.  He can't wait to go to Paris just for the train.

The village we went to see was called Perouges.  According to wikipedia- it was originally an Italian town but became French in 1601.  It was a village of farmers and linen weavers.  Most likely the residents had freedom and were not bound to any type of Lord.

We had to walk up a steep hill and here is the view on the hike up.  We had quite a bit of whining from some certain kids on the way up.

This is really the back side of the village- found out later there is a parking lot and main gate on the other side.

This I believe may have been on the original entry gates to the village.

Here is the original gate

Lots of the little key holes to shoot your arrows out of.

The inside of the church- per the sign on the outside, the church was built later and has those small key holes for defense throughout.

People still reside in some of the homes.
On the walk back to the train station, there was a guy selling candy- Wes bought a bag for an arm and a leg- the kids walked back to us with these left over Easter balloons.  I asked Wes if he paid for them- he reports he was not sure- something was lost in our poor french.
